English 4, Semester 1 consists of a Pre-assessment test, an Introductory Unit, and four units that cover works from various genres of literature. The pieces in this course range from the earliest known works in the English language to the literature of Shakespeare to the modern novel. As students study the required literature, they will contemplate an issue of ongoing debate by philosophers to date: is man inherently evil?
The characteristics evident in the traditional literary genres of the epic, the novel, and the tragedy will be analyzed and evaluated. In addition to these literary works, students will also analyze and evaluate contemporary fiction/nonfiction and media, which will be part of a synthesis assignment/essay. The study of these works of literature and the research component will enable the student to understand the development of the English language and literature, to appreciate the unique style of an author, and to communicate effectively in various forms of writing.English 4 Core Objectives:
