English 4, Semester 2, consists of four units that cover works from a range of genres of literature. Through the study of different literary genres, students will see how the power of various modes of writing affects the world around them.
In Unit 2, students will study several non-fiction essays and deconstruct the essays’ validity. The students will also choose an issue to research and compile information to write persuasive essay. Units 3 and 4 will focus on the genre of satire through various pieces of literature. As the student focuses on the cultural and societal issues highlighted in Units 2 through 4, the student will construct his/her own personal philosophy statement in Unit 5. The study of these works of literature and the research component will enable the student to understand how various modes of writing can facilitate societal change and cultural awareness and communicate an understanding of these changes in various forms of writing.English 4 Core Objectives:
-Interpret the possible influences of the historical context on literary works.
-Comprehend selections using a variety of strategies.
-Draw inferences such as conclusions, generalizations, and predictions and support them with text evidence and experience.
